BBC - History - Paul von Hindenburg (1847 - 1934)- Field marshal during World War One and second president of the Weimar Republic (1925-34) when Germany was wracked by political instability and economic depression. This helped Nazi political success, with which Hindenburg ultimately acquiesced by appointing Hitler as chancellor in 1933.
